More than just a name
Every calendar date falls on exactly one day of the week, calculated precisely rather than estimated — the same underlying calendar system your device already uses. Alongside the day name, this also works out the total days and weeks that have passed since then, a more concrete way to look at an age than just counting years.
How the day of the week is worked out
The calculation follows the Gregorian calendar, which repeats on a 400-year cycle. Because leap years are not simply every fourth year — century years are skipped unless divisible by 400, which is why 1900 was not a leap year and 2000 was — the day of the week for a given date does not follow a simple pattern, and it is easier to compute than to remember.
For dates before the Gregorian calendar was adopted there is a genuine complication. Different countries switched at different times, spanning from the 1580s to the 1920s, and the switch skipped days — so a date in that period can correspond to two different weekdays depending on which calendar the record was written in. Anything from the twentieth century onward is unambiguous.
