How the settle-up works
Every expense adds the full amount to the payer's balance and subtracts an even share from everyone it was split among — including the payer, if they're part of the split. Once every expense is in, each person's balance shows whether they're net owed money or net owe money. Instead of asking everyone to repay every individual expense, the tool nets those balances against each other and produces the smallest set of payments that clears everyone to zero.
Common questions
Why is the number of payments fewer than the number of expenses?
Because the tool settles net balances, not each expense individually. If Ali owes Sara from one expense and Sara owes Ali from another, those partly cancel out — the result is the smallest set of payments that leaves everyone even, not a payment for every single expense.
What if an expense wasn't split evenly among everyone?
Uncheck anyone who wasn't part of that particular expense before adding it — a taxi only two people took, for instance. The cost splits evenly among whoever is checked for that expense, and everyone else is unaffected by it.
Can I remove someone after adding expenses?
Only if they're not referenced in any expense — as the payer or as someone splitting the cost. This is deliberate: silently removing someone with unsettled expenses could quietly change what everyone else owes without them noticing.
