How the split works
The tip is worked out on the full bill first — bill × tip percentage ÷ 100 — then added to get the total. That total is divided evenly across however many people you set, so each share includes both their portion of the food and their portion of the tip.
Tipping is a local custom, not a fixed rule
The maths is simple; the percentage is not. In the United States, fifteen to twenty per cent on the pre-tax total is the usual expectation for table service, and staff wages are often set on the assumption it will be paid. In much of Europe, service is included and rounding up is a courtesy rather than a duty. In Japan tipping can be politely refused. There is no single correct figure, only the local one.
Two details change the total more than people expect. Whether you tip on the amount before or after tax makes a real difference on a large bill, and a service charge already printed on the bill means the tip has arguably been paid for you — adding another on top is a choice, not an obligation.
For a shared bill, splitting the tip in the same proportion as the food is fairer than splitting it evenly when people ordered very differently.
