Why timed drills work
Mental arithmetic improves through retrieval rather than reading — the useful moment is the one where you have to produce an answer under mild pressure, not the one where you follow a worked example. A short timer supplies that pressure without turning practice into a chore, and a running streak makes the cost of a careless slip visible immediately. The difficulty settings change the size of the numbers rather than the operations themselves, so you can keep the mix you want to practise and adjust only how demanding it is. Division questions are built backwards from a whole-number product, which means every one of them divides exactly and you are never left guessing at a decimal.

Consecutive correct answers without a mistake. It resets when you clear the box and start an answer over, which is the closest signal available to a wrong attempt.
