The classic look, automatically

White fill with a black outline, bold, all-capitals — the format that's been standard since the earliest image macros. Text is capitalized and outlined automatically, and wraps onto extra lines if a caption is too long to fit on one, so captions of any length stay readable without spilling off the edge.

Why the text looks the way it does

The heavy white text with a black outline is not a style choice so much as a survival trait. Memes get re-shared, re-compressed and viewed at thumbnail size on bright and dark backgrounds alike, and a thick outline is the one treatment that stays readable through all of it. Thin or coloured type disappears the moment the image is resized.

Keep captions short for the same reason. Two lines read at a glance; five lines become a wall nobody stops for. If the joke needs a long setup, the setup usually belongs in the post rather than burned into the picture.

One thing this tool cannot settle for you is whether you are allowed to use the picture. Editing an image does not give you rights to it, and stills from films, TV and stock libraries stay owned by somebody. For anything public, safer to start from a photo you took or an image licensed for reuse.

Common questions

Why does the text always come out in capitals?

That's the classic meme convention — bold, capitalized, white text with a black outline. Whatever case you type in gets converted automatically, so you don't have to remember to hold shift.

What happens if my caption is too long?

It wraps onto additional lines automatically, keeping each line within the image's width rather than running off the edge or shrinking unpredictably.

Is my image uploaded anywhere?

No. The captions are drawn directly onto an HTML canvas in your browser. The image never leaves your device.
